'HINDOOSTAN' (India and Ceylon) by Sydney Hall c.1827

'HINDOOSTAN' (India and Ceylon) by Sydney Hall c.1827
SKU: hagafm/indi/001

A very attractive, finely engraved and rare early 19th century map of India which was published in Sydney Hall's A New General Atlas (London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown & Green; 1829-1830 [first edition]). This historically interesting and collectable map was published at the time the British East India Company was consolidating its hold over India and was the work of Sydney Hall (1788-1831) who was one of the most recognised and prolific British map engravers at the time when Britain excelled in map making. Interestingly, a previous (19th century) owner has added some hand written notes to the map and borders; one reads, "At Saugun, rests the dust of sweet Emily in hope of a blessed resurrection" whereas another makes reference to "Lord Gough's victory over Sikhs Feb. 1849".
