A splendid and detailed early 18th century copper engraved plate, containing a plan of Gibraltar, its fortifications and prospect views of Cadiz and Gibraltar, which was published in Nuremburg by Homann’s Heirs. The plan in the top right includes an explanatory note (written in German) about the taking of Gibraltar in 1704 by Admiral William Rooke and the fortifications built by the British to defend their then recently acquired territory. The bottom plan / prospect displays the entire peninsula with reference to its natural defences (rock of Gibraltar) and its strategic value.
