A very attractive, decorative and unusual pair of mid 19th century views — showing the comparative height, length and size of the waterfalls, mountains, rivers, lakes and islands of the Western and Eastern Hemispheres — which were drawn and engraved by John Rapkin and published in John Tallis & co.’s The Illustrated Atlas (London & New York: c.1851).

John Tallis’s The Illustrated Atlas, published from 1849 onwards, was the last decorative world atlas. ‘The Comparative View[s] of the Waterfalls…’ engravings, in particular, epitomized the many fine works which appeared in the atlas with their ornamental borders and attractive views.
