An attractive late 19th century view of Brasenose College, Oxford which was etched by Henri Toussaint and published in Andrew Lang’s Oxford: Brief Historical and Descriptive Notes (London: Seeley, Jackson & Halliday, 1880).
Charles Henri Toussaint (1849-1911) was a French painter, illustrator and engraver. A pupil of Léon Gaucherel, Alfred-Louis Brunet-Debaines and Charles Waltner, he became famous at the Paris Salon (the official art exhibition of the Academie des Beaux-Arts) in 1874 and was awarded medals in 1876, 1884, 1899 and 1900. He was also known for his numerous prints representing the architecture of Paris, the French provincial towns (including Amiens, Rouen and Reims) and the English cities of Oxford, Cambridge and Liverpool.
