An interesting and attractive 18th century map of the county of Lincolnshire which was produced by Herman Moll* for his The Geography of England and Wales**(London:1747). The maps from this series are noted for their depiction of antiquities and other information in the margins. In the case of the Lincolnshire, this includes two Saxon Coins struck in Lincoln and a detailed Tide Table comparing the beginning and end of the ‘washes’ with the ‘Moons age’. The inclusion of a plate number ‘(25)’ dates this particular example to 1747.
*Herman Moll (c.1654-1732), born in either Germany or the Netherlands, came to London in the 1670s where he gradually established himself as one of the leading map publishers of the day. He was particularly noted for his contempt for plagiarists describing them amongst other things as ‘ignorant pretenders’.
