An interesting and attractive 18th century map of Nottinghamshire which was produced by Herman Moll* for his A New Description of England and Wales**(London:1724-1753). The maps from this series are noted for their depiction of antiquities in the margins. In the case of the Nottinghamshire map, Roman coins found in the county are displayed in both the top and bottom borders. The inclusion of a plate number ‘(29)’ dates this example to between 1724 and 1739.
*Herman Moll (c.1654-1732), born in either Germany or the Netherlands, came to London in the 1670s where he gradually established himself as one of the leading map publishers of the day. He was particularly noted for his contempt for plagiarists describing them amongst other things as ‘ignorant pretenders’.
