‘ELY CATHEDRAL’ by J. M. Kronheim & co. c.1867

An interesting 19th century colour print — based on the ‘Baxter Process’ — which was produced by Kronheim & co. for The Sunday at Home (London: The Religious Tract Society, 1867).

The ‘Baxter Process’, developed by George Baxter (1804-1867), is regarded as the first commercially viable form of colour printing. The technique combined intaglio (engraving, etching, stipple or aquatint) and relief printing (wood block); the former being used for the key plate and the latter for the different colours. The process was licensed to other printers, most notably a former apprentice, Joseph Kronheim (1810-1896), who improved the technique by favourng zinc over the much slower drying wooden blocks.

• Printed area is approximately 22.2cms by 16.4cms (including title).
