'THE NORTH RIDING OF YORKSHIRE' by Robert Morden c.1695
SKU: mord/yonr/004

An interesting and attractive 17th century map of the North Riding of Yorkshire which was produced by Robert Morden and published in Camden's Britannia (London: Swale, Awnshaw & Churchill, 1695). Bishop Gibson described the maps from this series as "much the fairest and most correct of any that have yet appeared". The maps are also notable for using up to three different mileage scales, none of which are based on the statute mile!

This particular example is a first edition as the River Tees is spelt 'Teeises R.' in the left border -- this was corrested in the next edition.

  • This is an original copperplate engraving with later hand colour.
  • Printed area is approximately 41.7cms by 36cms.
  • The map is in very good condition with adequate margins; central fold, as issued. There is some plate wear, particularly to the lower map. There is also a small piece of paper missing from the bottom fold but this does not affect the printed area. Click on image for a better view.
