An interesting etching – by George Cruikshank – showing Dick Wildfire, Squire Jenkins the Captain and Lady Halibut enjoying the tumultuous activities of the Italian Boulevard in Paris; first published in Pierce Egan’s Life in Paris (1821)

Pierce Egan’s ‘Life in Paris’ was the sequel to his ‘Life in London’. Like its predecessor, this work – through Cruickshank’s style of humour – focused on the less salubrious side of life in a capital city. The main protagonists this time are Dick Wildfire, Squire Jenkins, Captain O’Shuffleton and members of the Halibut family. Together they get into an array of adventures, or, more commonly, misadventures. Interestingly, Cruikshank had never visited Paris so his images of the city and its people are based on his own ideas and conjectures.
