An amusing mid 19th century Hablot K. Browne (a.k.a.‘Phiz’) etching / engraving which appeared in Robert Smith Surtees’ Mr Facey Romford’s Hounds (London: Bradbury, Evans & co, 1865).
Hablot Knight Browne (1815-1882), well known by his pen name ‘Phiz’, was a British artist and illustrator. He is best remembered for his illustrations for the works of Charles Dickens including David Copperfield, Dombey and Son, Martin Chuzzlewit and Bleak House. He also provided etchings for prominent writers such as Charles Lever, Augustus Septimus Mayhew, Harrison Ainsworth and R. S. Surtees and occasionally for the popular periodical, ‘Punch’.
Robert Smith Surtees (1805-1864) was an English editor, novelist and sporting writer, widely known as R. S. Surtees. He is most renowned for his creation of comic characters, most notably, Jorrocks, a somewhat uncouth but good natured sporting cockney grocer and Mr. Romford, a clever, impudent social climber who takes advantage of the gullibility of the country set. His novels are still considered engrossing and vigorous and are acknowledged for their astute social observations. Amongst his contemporary admirers was the writer, William Makepiece Thackery and the artist, William Morris.
