A very attractive and decorative 19th century map of Asia which was drawn and engraved by Raimond Bonheur and Laguillermie, respectively, and published in Victor Levasseur’s Atlas National IllustrĂ© (Paris: Pelissier, 1856).

Published between 1842 and 1872, Victor Levasseur’s ‘Atlas National’ was one of the most decorative and visually striking atlases of the 19th century. The map of Asia exemplified this with its aesthetic and allegorical imagery. Illustrated are references to the continent’s fauna and flora including bears, bison, rhinoceros and crocodiles; vignettes above the below the map depict the continent’s diverse ethnicity and in the top right corner, one observes Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, believed to be somewhere in Asia.
