An attractive 18th century view of Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire which was engraved by James Mynde for Nicolas Tindal’s The Continuation of Mr Rapin’s History of England (London: 1759-1763).
Nicolas Tindal (1687?1774) was the translator and continuer of Paul de Rapin’s History of England. His thirteen volume translation was first published in 1727, with an enlarged version containing notes, genealogical tables and maps of his own composition, published in 1732. Tindal was rewarded for his work by the presentation of a gold medal from Frederick, Prince of Wales, to whom he had decicated the second volume. In the 1750s, he published his ‘continuation’ of the series, bringing the work up to date with the reign of George II. Tindal’s writings combined with those of Rapin’s were greatly valued at the time and the work proved popular.
