A very attractive and highly decorative 19th century map of Corsica, with fine original outline colour, which was published in Victor Levasseur’s Atlas National Illustré (Paris: Pelissier, 1842-1872).
Published between 1842 and 1872, Victor Levasseur’s ‘Atlas National’ was one of the most decorative and visually striking atlases of the 19th century. The map of Corsica exemplified this with its ornate imagery. Illustated at the base of the map is a picturesque view of Ajaccio along with images of the island’s agricultural output including wine, oranges and olive oil. Most attention, however, is reserved for Corsica’s most famous son, Napoleon Bonaparte who is represented by two grand statues either side of the map. Two panels of text, written in French, describe in more detail the Island’s size, population, situation, commerce, curiosities and.famous inhabitants.
