‘RUGBY SCHOOL’ by J. Godfrey c.1870

A very attractive late 19th century steel engraving of Rugby School, Warwickshire which appeared in John Alfred Langford’s Staffordshire and Warwickshire Past and Present (William Mackenzie, London: 1870).

 It was at Rugby School that the field sport which bears its name was first played; it was also the setting of the literary classic, ‘Tom Brown’s School Days’ by William Hughes (published 1857).
