A finely engraved and picturesque early 19th century vignette view of Woolsthorpe Manor in Woolsthorpe-by-Colsterworth, near Grantham, Lincolnshire which was drawn and engraved by James Bourne and Bartholomew Howlett, respectively, and published in [Howlett’s] A Selection of Views in the County of Lincoln (London: W. Miller, 1801-1806). This particularly engraving only appeared in the earlier editions and is thus rare.
Sir Isaac Newton was born in Woolsthorpe Manor, then a yeomanry farm, on Christmas Day 1642 (Julian calendar). He returned here in 1666 — when Cambridge University closed due to the plague — and spent his time performing many of his most famous experiments, most notably on light and optics. It is said to be the very place where he observed an apple falling from a tree which inspired him to formulate his ‘law of universal gravitation’.
