An attractive and finely engraved 18th Century map of Somerset, by Emanuel Bowen, which first appeared in Benjamin’s Martin’s General Magazine of Arts & Sciences (London: W. Owen, October 1755) and then The Natural History of England (London: W. Owen, 1763).
Emanuel Bowen (fl. 1714-1767) was a renowned map engraver and cartographer of the 18th century. He produced a large range of maps and atlases of the finest quality, often working alongside other noted cartographers such as Thomas Kitchin, his former apprentice, and Thomas Bowen, his son. His efforts were rewarded with his appointments as Geographer to both King George II of Great Britain and Louis XV of France. In spite of his many achievements, however, he never gained lasting wealth and died in poverty.
