An attractive 18th century map of Dorset which was engraved by Thomas Kitchin for Henry Boswell’s Antiquities of England & Wales* (London: Alexander Hogg, 1786 – 1798).

Thomas Kitchin (1718-1784) was a renowned engraver and cartographer of the eighteenth century. Apprenticed to Emanuel Bowen in 1732, he later set up his own business in Holborn in 1755. Throughout his working life, he produced a wide range of atlases and topographical works of a high standard, often in conjunction with other notable cartographers such as Emanuel Bowen and Thomas Jefferys. In 1773, Kitchin’s exceptional abilities were recognised when he was bestowed the position of Hydrographer to the King.
