A rare and unusual 18th century ‘bird’s eye view’ map of Devon which was originally produced by George Bickham and published in A Curious Antique Collection of Bird’s eye Views* (London: Laurie & Whittle, 1796).
The George Bickham county maps are perhaps the most unusual ones ever printed. Unlike conventional maps, the observer is placed in a fictitious vantage point overlooking the county. In the case of Bedfordshire, the town of Bedford is seen in the distance whilst other towns such as Biggleswade, Luton and Dunstable are closer to the foreground. All the while one is presented with a quaint 18th century image of rustic charm and tranquility.
