An interesting and detailed 19th century map of Huntingdonshire which was engraved by John and Charles Walker and published in their British Atlas (London: Longman, Orme, Rees & co., c.1837-1870). An interesting feature with maps of this period is the depiction of the recently constructed (or proposed) railways.
John and Charles Walker (fl. 1820-1835) were well known and prolific nineteenth century map makers, engravers and publishers. In 1837, they produced their ‘British Atlas’ which contained forty-seven finely engraved and detailed maps of the English counties. The work immediately proved popular with the Victorian public and was published in many editions up to c.1880. The maps were also used, as lithographic transfers, for Hobson’s ‘Fox Hunting Atlas’ which itself was published well into the 1890s.The Walkers are also noted for engraving fine maps for other publishers’ works including Archibald Fullarton’s ‘Parliamentary Gazetteer’ (1843), Samuel Lewis’s ‘Topographical Dictionary’ (1831) and C. & J. Greenwood’s ‘Atlas of the Counties of England’ (1834).
