An attractive and rare 18th Century map of the West Riding of Yorkshire which was engraved by Thomas Kitchin and published in the Thomas Kitchin (1718-1784) was one of the leading map makers of the period producing many fine maps and atlases.

Unlike most of the maps from the London Magazine, the West riding is particularly rare as it was omitted from the later Boswell’s Antiquities (1786).

Thomas Kitchin (1718-1784) was a renowned engraver and cartographer of the eighteenth century. Apprenticed to Emanuel Bowen in 1732, he later set up his own business in Holborn in 1755. Throughout his working life, he produced a wide range of atlases and topographical works of a high standard, often in conjunction with other notable cartographers such as Emanuel Bowen and Thomas Jefferys. In 1773, Kitchin’s exceptional abilities were recognised when he was bestowed the position of Hydrographer to the King.
